‘Initial Peer Review’ for the Constructing Excellence in Wales Demonstration Programme

There is a growing demand for Welsh medium education in Carmarthenshire as in other parts of Wales. The existing Ffwrnes school, located on an adjacent site, is oversubscribed and is housed in a small Victorian school with the majority of pupils educated in mobile classrooms. The new school will address the current need and predicted future demands. The proposed building has already achieved BREEAM Outstanding certification for its Design Stage and will be the first Primary School in Wales to be built to BREEAM Outstanding standards on completion later this year.

The school, which will provide two-form entry for 420 children, is being built by WRW Construction as part Carmarthenshire County Councils previous capital works framework which focused on procuring award winning projects as art of the Council’s Modernising Education Programme. It has been funded by a £10.22 million Welsh Government grant, and £4.38 million from the council’s capital programme.

Whilst the project addresses a number of social and economic areas the key demonstration theme is the environmental performance of the building and its contribution to lowering whole life costs. Various measures are included in the design to reduce energy demand, encourage eco-friendly behaviour and responsible use. Rainwater harvesting, external planting areas, renewable energy sources and other features are included.

The project is participating in the Constructing Excellence in Wales Demonstration Programme for Wales which is designed to promote Best Practice and innovation in construction. By attending this event you will learn from the project team of the challenges faced in constructing such a facility. You will also have opportunities to participate in the discussion and provide your own ‘review’ or assessment of the project via a simple scoring mechanism. This provides a valuable stage in the process of a project becoming a ‘demonstration’.
