CEWales E Bulletin January 2023

We have been through over two years of unprecedented disruption, stimulating irreversible change in how we live and work. In our new reality we are embracing digitalisation like never before, the need to tackle net zero and climate change is at the heart of government and business decision making. Global uncertainty is driving inflation, disrupting supply chains and creating a skills shortage.

The Construction Industry has been innovating like never before through initiatives like the Transforming Construction Challenge and the Construction Innovation Hub. The government through the Construction Playbook and changes to procurement regulations all want to see this innovation deployed at scale.   At the latest CE Conference ‘Thriving through Uncertainty’ we came together as a sector to explore the tools needed to see us through these uncertain times. We discussed and explored ideas on how we implement this transformation. We looked at how we scale up innovation and technology, what the emerging technologies are and how they will help us deliver better outcomes and how we can progress the research, demonstration, exemplars, and pilots to real time commercial implementation.

This conference brought together key influencers from across the Constructing Excellence movement and wider industry to consider how we harness this innovation and push for the transformation that will enable us to thrive in our new reality. To be able to do this we need to foster a culture that embraces this innovation by unlocking the collaborative culture that is the foundation of Constructing Excellence and by tacking head on the cultural issues that make it difficult to attract and retain talent in the construction industry.

The foundation for success is also about thriving commercially, moving away from short-term, transactional approaches to deliver thriving organisations and supply chains, based on sound commercial relationships. It’s about clients and industry working together, boosting productivity, adding value, providing opportunities for growth, accelerating delivery and reducing waste.

Transformation is about more output and more impact by supporting the policy objectives of Government and ultimately enabling the industry to thrive!
