Sally Sudworth, Director – WLZCHSession 1: Carbon Capture and Storage (6pm till 6:35pm)
The increase in global atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations since the industrial revolution is widely accepted as being the main contributor to the recently observed rises in global temperatures. If carbon emissions are continued to be released into the global atmosphere it is believed that this will lead to catastrophic impacts to the world we live in today including decreased crop yields, mass migration leading from sea level rises, increased storm intensities, mass plant and animal extinctions and increasing global conflicts to name a few.One proposed method of reducing carbon emissions is a technology known as carbon capture and storage (CCS). Carbon emissions are captured from large scale point source emitters, such as power stations and industrial plants compressed and transported to suitable sites for storage deep in the sub-surface in a variety of different geological settings. The technology is interesting as it allows the continued usage of existing fossil based systems, with reduced carbon emissions as a bridge until a more sustainable energy source can be found.
This talk introduces the various options available for the capture of carbon dioxide, from pre or post combustion capture together with some more novel ideas under investigation today. The various geological storage options are then discussed together with locations around the globe where this technology is currently being employed. The economic implications for CCS are also introduced to summarise the impact the technology might have on domestic energy prices. Finally the various storage options available to Wales are considered with a brief summary of some of the work being undertaken at Cardiff University.

Wales Low Zero Carbon Hub: – Integrating water and energy efficiency – building regulations and beyond – Cardiff
- Thursday, March 8th, 2012:
Title: Wales Low Zero Carbon Hub – Integrating water and energy efficiency – building regulations and beyond
Date: Thursday 8th March 2012
Location: Cardiff (venue details provided with registration confirmation)
Time: 8am - 11am
Cost: FreeThe Wales Low Zero Carbon Hub is delighted to host the following meeting.
Heating hot water in the home (excluding central heating) accounts for 3% of annual carbon dioxide emissions in Wales (5% for the UK – equivalent to aviation). As we address space heating emissions, heating water will become a larger proportion of domestic carbon emissions.
A 50-80% reduction in natural summer river flows is predicted for Wales by the 2050s. We face further pressure with 200,000 new homes by 2025 and 80% of existing less-efficient homes remaining by 2050. The carbon emission mitigation potential of combined water and energy efficiency can enable adaptation responses through cost effective delivery of water efficiency using existing energy programmes and the devolved building regulations.
Aaron Burton, Water Resources Advisor, Environment Agency Wales
- Why water and energy efficiency?
- Integrating policy and programmes
- Progress to date and current behaviour change programmes.
- Future opportunities
Andrew Tucker, Water Strategy Manager, Energy Saving Trust

- Lessons learned from the devolved building regulations for Scotland.
- Case-studies and modelling for changes in Wales.

Unearth your Career – Cardiff
- Wednesday, March 21st, 2012:
Title: Unearth your Career
Date: Wednesday 21st March 2012
Location: Cardiff (venue details provided with registration confirmation)
Time: 8am – 10.30am
Cost: £20 + VAT (Club members) – £30 + VAT (Non-members)Do you know what direction your job is taking you? Can you see a well-defined career path? Do you want to play a key role within an organisation or lead your own team? Have you got an idea worthy of the Dragon’s Den? If you need inspiration then join us for breakfast for the latest CEW event in Cardiff on 7th February and hear how 28-year old Abi Carter uncovered her own career by starting her own business.
Many people in construction will dream of setting up their own consultancy or contracting business – but where do you start? And when is the right time? Now, when you have a great idea or later when you have more experience? With no business experience and aged just 24 years old, forensic archaeologist Abi Carter decided the time was right to leave the security of her job and set up on her own. In 2008, Abi launched Forensic Resources, a forensic science consultancy firm offering expert witness services to legal teams throughout the UK and internationally.
“It was the right decision and I don’t regret it for one second. The biggest problem I faced was having no experience of setting up or running a business. But after doing some research on the internet, I discovered that there was a lot of help and support available. It has been an extremely busy four years and the business has grown from strength to strength. The only thing I would have done differently is to hire staff sooner and not think I could do everything myself,” commented Abi.
Abi’s determination and self-belief has paid off. She was awarded ‘Female Entrepreneur of the Year’ at the South Wales Business Awards 2010 and has been published in a book celebrating 100 ‘modern muses’ who inspire other women to become entrepreneurs.
Why not join the CEW team for breakfast at a forum where you can be inspired, find the answers to career problems or just see the wood for the trees. If all you want to do is take more control of your career then come along and hear from a young graduate who did exactly that.

Location: Christchurch Centre, BT Compound, Malpas Road, Newport NP20 5PP
Time: 9am – 12pm
Cost: FreeAsbestos is the single greatest cause of work-related deaths in the UK.
The consequences of not being ‘asbestos aware’ can devastate the lives of tradesmen and their families. HSE estimates that on average, 20 tradesmen die from asbestos-related diseases each week.
When these fibres are inhaled they can cause serious diseases. The four main ones are: mesothelioma (which is always fatal), lung cancer (almost always fatal), asbestosis (not always fatal, but it can be very debilitating) and diffuse pleural thickening (not fatal).
To help raise awareness, a free half day event is being held on 31 January 2012 at Christchurch Centre, BT Compound, Malpas Road, Newport NP20 5PP. It will run from 9am – 12pm and will include refreshments. The event will cover asbestos surveys, HSE’s requirements under the Asbestos Regulations and the view of the contractor.
This event provides health and safety advice and guidance so that those who may be exposed to asbestos at work know what to do to protect themselves and others. It is a MUST for all small construction companies and self employed involved in refurbishment and those in trades such as plumbers, carpenters etc.
Due to limited spaces, this event is for trades people only who work for companies with less than 40 employees. A maximum of 4 delegates per company. This year’s RSAW conference will consider the way the delivery of design has changed over recent years and how the established models of architectural practice are unravelling and re-making themselves.
We’re beginning to look at themes around certain questions:
• As the recession continues to bite, how are emerging architects finding new approaches to winning and carrying out their work?
• How are the established players reacting to the new challenges?
• Are the old models for building architectural practices out of date?
• Do we need to be looking at new, more flexible ways of making design happen?
• Is collaboration the answer?
The 2011 RSAW conference will bring together experts from across the UK to look at these issues:
• Christine Murray, Editor of The Architects Journal will chair the conference, as well as speaking on the issue of why print publications still count when it comes to winning clients and influencing people
• Fran Balaam/ Michael Corr (Pie Architecture) will consider how the new generation are changing the practice of architecture
• Su Butcher (Just Practising) will talk about the importance of 21st century media which is changing the way we work and can give architects a voice
• RIBA Stephen Lawrence Prize 2011 winner Phil Coffey (Coffey Architects) will talk about surviving and winning in the current financial climate.
• Young Architect of the Year David Kohn (David Kohn Architects) will touch on incompleteness, coincidence and how that determines the future.
Break-out workshops with:
• Edmund Fowles / Fergus Feilden (Feilden Fowles) – Starting a practice in the recession
• Lorna Parsons – how to make social media work for you
•Micheal Holliday + Chris Hall (Roots Design Workshop) – exploring the concept of Archivan, the architect’s mobile office
• Andy Thomson (BCA Landscape) – It is not down on any map; true places never are…
Inspiration Hour by Deborah Saunt (DSDHA). Through her experience as an award-winning practitioner; her role on a range of juries (current chair RIBA awards, Olympic Delivery Authority 2008, American Institute of Architects Awards 2007; RIBA Gold Medal 2006; RIBA Presidents Medals 2006), her TV and radio broadcasts and widely published writing on architecture, Deborah is well placed to comment on how the delivery of design is changing.
This event is the only dedicated conference and exhibition for the architectural profession in Wales and attracts around 150 decision-makers and practitioners. The RSAW Conference provides a unique networking forum that shares and compares best practice, expertise and experience.

The legislation driving Sustainable Construction has created ‘islands of information’ produced by different organisations and individuals. Hundreds of documents and web sites have been created, design tools devised and events organised with little or no co-ordination or awareness of others.
Wouldn’t it be easier to access everything you need via one single web portal? That is the idea behind SCRIPT.
SCRIPT aims to provide a ‘one-stop-shop’ solution to access knowledge, expertise and best practice in a single click. It is not intended to replace existing web sites. The aim is to provide direct links to relevant and useful information wherever it is located – thus avoiding time-consuming searching.
SCRIPT will contain information and documents relating to the construction of new buildings, the refurbishment of existing property and the provision of infrastructure. Users will have the ability to create a home page and layout which suits them and specific interests and requirements, making it a truly dynamic and bespoke channel for information for all sections of the built environment supply chain.
It is an exciting prospect but it needs the industry to start using it and develop it if is to succeed and gain real momentum. To play your part and lead the development of SCRIPT sign up to here

Sustainable Gwynedd GynaladwyWorkshop
The SUSREF research project has been running since 1 Oct 2009 and will finish 30 April 2012. One of the last work-packages of the project, led by BRE-Wales, is to develop and test the prototype assessment method with practitioners.

RWE Technology’s chief task is to build new facilities for RWE’s power generation companies, ensuring that the Group’s new power stations are among the most advanced and cost-efficient in their class in Europe – now and in the future. At the same time, RWE Technology takes active steps to fulfill its huge responsibility for health and safety, the environment and climate protection. It makes sure these key criteria are at the heart of the construction process and subsequent operation of the new facilities.
Every accident on a building site is associated with personal suffering, which affects work colleagues and family alike. Aside from the moral and professional duty that we all hold to our employees, accidents also interrupt the construction work and may result in financial losses. If the construction industry can safely control work activities better, it may prove to be value adding in that employees are healthier and potential financial losses are prevented – Good Health and Safety means Good Business.
This event is presented by Working Well Together and RWE Technology (UK) Ltd, and supported by Morgan Cole Solicitors and Alstom Power. You will gain an invaluable insight into your responsibilities as a manager and how it could affect your life.
Please ensure that at least one of your colleagues attends this very informative and interactive day – this is seen as a must for all managers working within the construction environment.

Water Carbon Conundrum – Cardiff

Date: 7th September 2011

“Water Carbon Conundrum” – integrating water and energy efficiency in Wales by Aaron Burton Water Resources Advisor, Environment Agency Wales. Cardiff University, Trevithick Building, Faculty Lecture Theatre (T2.09) on 7th September 2011 at 6pm Abstract
Water is a key medium through which we feel the impacts of climate change as well as a key driver through emissions from supply, use and disposal. Water and energy are clearly linked, however these policy areas have evolved separately in the UK and internationally. Heating hot water in the home (excluding central heating) accounts for 3% of annual carbon dioxide emissions in Wales (5% for the UK – equivalent to aviation). This correlates with findings from Australia, the USA and Canada.
A 50-80% reduction in natural summer river flows is predicted for Wales by the 2050s. We face further pressure with 200,000 new homes by 2025 and 80% of existing less-efficient homes remaining by 2050. The carbon emission mitigation potential of combined water and energy efficiency can enable adaptation responses through cost effective delivery of water efficiency using existing energy programmes. The challenge of integrating policy and programmes on water and energy efficiency in Wales, actions taken through pilot projects and case studies are discussed. Future options and the implications of combined water and energy efficiency are presented.
