You are invited to attend a joint event with CEW and ICE Wales Cymru to hear about the history, the refurbishment contract and the complexity of the design and build phase of the Brynglas Tunnels. Presentations will be delivered by Costain, Welsh Government and Aracadis.

The Brynglas Tunnels and adjacent structures, first opened in 1967 after a 3 year construction period and have been in operation continuously ever since. At their peak they carry approximately 80,000 vehicles per day and must be considered a major transport link for the resilience of Wales and the wider UK.

Following continuous use and the progressive increase in traffic volumes, the structures and tunnel's condition were evaluated as poor with many assets reaching their operational life.  Furthermore, the tunnel experienced a serious lorry fire in the westbound tunnel in July 2011, where 215m of the original internal and exit zone lighting was destroyed, as a result, temporary lighting and a 50mph speed restriction was imposed to maintain traffic flows and transport resilience.

The contract for the refurbishment of both the tunnel and adjacent structures was awarded to Costain in 2016, due to the complexity of River Usk Bridge the design remained with Welsh Government and specifically WSP.

You will be charged in full for non - attendance unless you have informed us two days before the event.
