Title: Building Information Modelling (BIM) Welsh Industry Update
Date: Monday 21st May 2012
Location: Cardiff (venue details provided with registration confirmation)
Time: 9am registration, start 9.30am, finish midday
Cost: £20 plus VAT
BIM is catching the imagination and attention of senior decision makers in Welsh construction. As BIM will inevitably become part of any future Welsh Construction Procurement Strategy, CEW are establishing a Task Group to consider what Industry Clients wants and how it can be supplied.
In the first of what will become a series of Industry sessions we are fortunate to have David Philp, who is currently working for the Cabinet Office’s Efficiency and Reform Group where he is “Head of BIM Implementation”. David will give an update on the background and rollout of BIM in England. This will give us here in Wales a strong position from which to fashion what is right for our industry.
The workshop will also feature a brief presentation on how BIM is already being used here in Wales on the Port Talbot PDR Stage 2.
A similar event will take place in North Wales, date to be confirmed as soon as possible. (more…)

Title: North & Mid Wales Contractor Framework “Engaging with the business community to deliver best value” by the North & Mid Wales Trunk Road Agency
Date: Wednesday 4th April 2012
Location: Neuadd Brithdir, Ffordd Llwyn Talcen, Brithdir, Dolgellau, Gwynedd, LL40 2RU
Time: 2pm – 3.30pm
Cost: Free
The North Wales Best Practice Club in association with Constructing Excellence in Wales presents :
An Initial Peer Review for the CEW Demonstration Programme
This is your opportunity to learn how the North and Mid Wales Trunk Road Agencies in partnership with Gwynedd Consultancy set out to engage with the business community to help shape their forthcoming strategic framework agreement for highway works.
Framework agreements have been around for quite a while now. Loved by some, unloved by others. There’s no doubt though that lessons have been learnt over the years and continue to be learnt. The truth is well structured framework agreements can be a great way for public and private sectors to work together in long term, collaborative relationships to maximise value from investment, maximise social benefits and achieve positive environmental outcomes. However getting the ‘right’ framework depends on understanding the local market place and how it can best respond to client requirements.
This innovative practice is being put forward as part of the Constructing Excellence in Wales Demonstration Programme so that others can judge for themselves the benefits that will, hopefully, accrue from the decision to engage with local businesses.
Further reviews will be held over the next 12-18 months to describe how the framework is delivering against its stated objectives
Who should attend?
- Clients and procurers – to learn how early engagement with the supply chain can help shape a procurement strategy to deliver greater value
- Contractors and Consultants – to better understand how their input to a consultation process can positively support clients and procurers in developing their procurement strategies (more…)

Date: Thursday 29th March 2012
Location: Cardiff (venue details provided with registration confirmation)
Time: 5.30pm – 7.30pm
Cost: Free
Good teamwork can be the secret to success in Welsh construction.
If you can get it right, teams can add value to any project and help cut costs as well as achieve Government targets on waste and low carbon. It is always tough to maintain the right team spirit that enhances performance and it’s not unusual to see relationships become tense, fractious and fall apart as a result of increasing economic pressure and the demand for quick results.
Right now, more than ever, it is hard to maintain a culture of teamwork. It is very tempting when the pressure rises to lose sight of what is best for the team and to concentrate on your own struggles.
So how do you hold the team together and put the group first, focussed on the long term goals of value? Why not turn to the best example of teamwork in Wales – rugby? Why not learn from the experience of Gareth Jenkins? (more…)

Following the announcement on Building.co.uk that ‘All government projects to use BIM within five years’, the CIOB Novus Wales Team are delighted to be holding an introductory evening into Building Information Modelling.
Construction projects involve a complex set of relationships, between parties with different professional backgrounds trying to achieve avery complex goal. The Wales Low Zero Carbon Hub is delighted to host the following meeting.
Heating hot water in the home (excluding central heating) accounts for 3% of annual carbon dioxide emissions in Wales (5% for the UK – equivalent to aviation). As we address space heating emissions, heating water will become a larger proportion of domestic carbon emissions.
A 50-80% reduction in natural summer river flows is predicted for Wales by the 2050s. We face further pressure with 200,000 new homes by 2025 and 80% of existing less-efficient homes remaining by 2050. The carbon emission mitigation potential of combined water and energy efficiency can enable adaptation responses through cost effective delivery of water efficiency using existing energy programmes and the devolved building regulations.
