Winner: North Wales Adolescent Unit, Laing O’Rourke Wales & West
In achieving this award, Laing O’Rourke have achieved outstanding results for Health & Safety on this project, not only achieving zero reportable accidents and lost time injuries as a result of accidents but an Accident Frequency Rate way below the industry average.
However, it is the manner in which this was achieved that makes this project special. By addressing the main root causes of accidents at the early planning stages, risks were not only managed but considerably reduced. This was achieved by carrying out detailed risk assessments at Business Case stage, far earlier than normal, thereby allowing the team to carry out early completion of work which would enable safe access to site.
Training of personnel also went beyond the norm with the intention of developing a ‘desire’ to achieve high standards rather than just ‘conformance’. More than this, the team specifically targeted two of the most common causes of accidents at the earliest stage.
Following an unannounced inspection by the Health and Safety Inspectorate, the Inspector commended the site adding ‘… I….. attribute at least part of the high standards seen at this site to the cooperation and proactive communication that was evident between the client and Laing O’Rourke…..’ In the judges opinion, the considerate approach linked to outstanding results make this a worthy winner
