Winner:   Magnox North

Magnox North is responsible for five nuclear sites across the United Kingdom. Two are generating, whilst three are defueling and decommissioning.  None of the work is starightforward, all of it is very complex and, particularly where the decommissioning is concerned, the work is sometimes very delicate and painstaking.  In Wales Magnox North has responsibility for two Nuclear sites Trawsfynydd and Wylfa.  Trawsfynydd, in the heart of Snowdonia National Park, North Wales, is now defuelled and being decommissioned. When operational the station produced enough electricity to meet the needs of a city the size of Manchester in the UK.  Historically the nuclear industry had taken a traditional and sometimes adversarial approach to contracting with its supply chain; concerns were raised whether this approach would be sustainable given the increased complexity and risk associated with decommissioning nuclear sites.

With the support of the supply chain, a collaborative alliance based on the Rethinking Construction agenda was put together at Trawsfynydd to deliver the highly complex decommissioning of the site, creating the Trawsfynydd Strategic Integrated Frameworks (TSIF).  TSIF is one of the CE in Wales demonstration projects.  It is the first scheme of its kind in the nuclear industry to adopt a collaborative, framework approach and in a sector that is traditionally non-collaborative; the team has driven change that could have potential impact across the nuclear industry.

The Egan principle of ‘Committed Leadership’ is clearly evident through the culture of collaboration that has been developed throughout the supply chain. This has been achieved through the personal involvement of the commercial lead team in providing clear vision and direction and developing this through roadshows and feedback sessions.  The team possessed and demonstrated to the judges a wealth of information to support best practice and it was clear that the team had a robust and clear communication strategy. One example amongst many, of the commitment to people as evidenced by this team is the 1000 days on the flagship Trawsfynydd project without a single lost time accident. Despite the success so far, the team believe that this is just the start as they strive for further ways through the collaborative approach to improve and develop.
